Home Addition in Olney, MD

Project Overview

Located in Olney, MD, this home holds deep sentimental value for the client, as it is the house where she grew up. Returning to the area, she wanted to preserve its character while making updates and expanding it to better suit her lifestyle as she plans to grow older in the home.

Architecture

The project focused on extending the first floor to the front and back, creating a spacious, open layout designed for comfortable daily living and entertaining. Since most time would be spent on this level, the design prioritized functionality, flow, and accessibility.

The front addition features a primary suite with an en-suite bathroom and a walk-in closet. A welcoming front porch and a two-car garage were also incorporated. The existing structure was reconfigured to include a home office, a mudroom/laundry room, and an open-concept kitchen with a walk-in pantry.

At the rear, the expansion allowed for a larger living room, dining area, and a family room, seamlessly connected to the kitchen. A screened-in porch was also added for additional indoor-outdoor living space. To maximize views of the beautiful backyard, large glass doors were installed in the living room, dining room, and family room, enhancing the home's connection to its natural surroundings.

The exterior elevations were redesigned to maintain the home's traditional style while updating its appearance to reflect a modern farmhouse aesthetic. A black wall behind the porch was strategically incorporated to conceal the asymmetry of existing windows, which could not be relocated due to their placement near the stairs. On the second floor, windows were repositioned to align symmetrically between the porch columns, enhancing the overall balance of the façade. Bay windows at both the front and back further contributed to the farmhouse charm, adding character and architectural interest.

Interior Design

The clients embraced a coastal traditional aesthetic, incorporating blue accents and brass fixtures. The powder room mosaics draw inspiration from the Greek heritage of her spouse, adding a personal touch. A reclaimed beam serves as the fireplace mantle, bringing warmth and character to the space. The overall design is transitional, featuring a palette of off-white and blue tones complemented by natural wood elements. Subtle patterns are woven throughout the home to create a unique and elegant style. Custom-built pieces, including built-ins in the home office, mudroom, and pantry, were designed during the interior design process, along with the vanities in the primary bathroom.
