5-Units in Mt Vernon Square
Located within Washington, DC’s Mount Vernon Square Historic District, this project transforms an existing townhome into a five-unit residential building. A partial third-floor addition was carefully positioned to remain hidden from the street, preserving the character of the original home and its relationship to the historic neighborhood.

The project received approvals from both HPRB and BZA and includes a mix of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom units. Through thoughtful design, new housing options and greater density were introduced within the constraints of the historic building, without compromising its character.
A varied mix of unit sizes brings flexibility to this unique urban building, offering housing options for different household configurations, lifestyles, and budgets. From efficient studios to larger two-bedroom residences, each unit is thoughtfully planned to make the most of the building’s historic footprint.
Large windows are introduced wherever possible, bringing abundant natural light into the residences and creating bright, open interiors that feel spacious and comfortable. Modern finishes create a subtle contrast with the historic character of the building, giving the interiors a fresh and contemporary feel.
