Palisades

Project Overview

Interior Renovation in Palisades

Located in DC’s Palisades neighborhood, this single-family home was reimagined for a growing family without adding square footage. By reconfiguring the first and second floors, the renovation makes better use of the existing footprint, improving circulation, functionality, and the relationship between spaces. The new layout creates more generous living areas, additional storage, and greater flexibility for everyday family life, demonstrating how a strategic reorganization can completely transform the way a home feels and functions.

Client:Home Owner
Service Provided:Architectural Design, Building Permit

Reimagining the first floor began by reconsidering the location of the dining room. Moving it into the larger living area allowed the original dining space to become a dedicated storage zone with a mudroom, butler’s pantry, and walk-in pantry, while freeing up valuable space to expand the kitchen. The new layout creates a generous kitchen with a breakfast nook and large island that opens to the family room at the rear. Together, these changes improve flow and storage while creating a more open and functional setting for everyday family life and entertaining.

Making Space

On the second floor, enclosing the double-height foyer created an additional bedroom without expanding the footprint of the home. The primary suite was reconfigured with a more efficient layout, including a redesigned primary bathroom and walk-in closets, while relocating the laundry room to this level added convenience to everyday family life. Together, these changes made better use of the existing space while creating a more comfortable and functional bedroom level.

Everyday Function

A new walk-in pantry and butler's pantry were integrated into the first-floor layout, adding convenience and much-needed storage without compromising the openness of the main living spaces. Designed as part of the larger reconfiguration, these smaller spaces play an important role in making the home work more efficiently for everyday family life.

The best transformations don’t always come from adding space, but from rethinking how the existing space can better support the way a family lives
