Takoma Park Mid-Century Renovation

This Takoma Park residence was transformed through a complete renovation that reimagined both its interior and exterior. Rather than increasing its footprint, the project focused on rethinking the home's layout and architectural expression, demonstrating how thoughtful design can dramatically transform a home.

The first floor was reimagined to create a more open and fluid living environment. Relocating the kitchen between the living and dining rooms established a natural flow throughout the home, while cathedral ceilings and strategically placed skylights bring daylight deep into the interiors. A picture window at the kitchen backsplash frames views of the side yard, and the family room opens seamlessly to the rear deck, strengthening the connection between indoor and outdoor living.

A New Identity

The exterior was completely reimagined, replacing the deteriorated stone façade with a refined palette of durable, contemporary materials. Two-tone fiber cement siding, custom angled windows, and new clerestory glazing reinforce the home's Mid-Century Modern character while filling the interiors with natural light. Rebuilt front and rear decks, together with a new sunken patio, extend the living spaces outdoors and complete the home's dramatic transformation.

Light + Volume

The second-floor bedrooms embrace the home’s Mid-Century Modern character through cathedral ceilings, expansive glazing, and clean architectural lines. Large windows follow the geometry of the roof, filling the interiors with natural light while opening the rooms to views of the backyard. The added height and connection to the landscape give the bedrooms a sense of openness, creating private spaces that feel bright, spacious, and comfortable.
