Located in DC’s Trinidad neighborhood, this project transforms an existing two-story townhouse into a stacked duplex while preserving the scale and character of the original building. Additional square footage was created through a rear expansion and a third-floor addition, carefully set back to minimize its visibility from the street.

The two residences are organized across multiple levels, each with three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, and a private street-level entrance. The upper residence extends to a private roof terrace, adding valuable outdoor living space within the compact urban footprint.
The units are designed with open-concept layouts, with large windows at the rear bringing abundant natural light deep into each residence.
While the back of the building opens to light and views, the front maintains the traditional proportions and character of the original townhouse, preserving its relationship to the surrounding streetscape.
The upper residence reverses the traditional townhouse layout, placing the bedrooms on the lower level and the main living spaces above. This arrangement creates a direct connection between the kitchen and living areas and the private rooftop terrace, extending the social spaces outdoors and bringing additional light into the home.
Thoughtful architecture allows this traditional townhouse to accommodate greater density and contemporary living while maintaining the scale and character of its original form
