The Spy House

Located in DC’s Westchester neighborhood, across from the Russian Embassy, this residence comes with an intriguing past, having reportedly served as a spy house for many years. Its history became an unexpected source of inspiration for the interior design, informing spaces that feel sophisticated, layered, and slightly mysterious. Rooted in a transitional, classic aesthetic, the interiors draw subtle references from the home’s espionage-era past through richly textured wallpapers, deep colors, collected details, and concealed spaces. Rather than recreating a specific period, the design captures its mood and intrigue, creating a home that feels timeless and elegant while revealing moments of character and surprise throughout.

Located at the rear of the home, the kitchen is anchored by a deep green island that creates a striking contrast against the surrounding off-white cabinetry. Brass hardware and lighting add warmth, while a subtle quartz countertop with soft gray and gold veining ties the palette together. The showstopper is a dark green range, introducing an unexpected layer of color and personality that gives the kitchen its distinctive character.

Turning Up the Volume

The basement is where the home’s more mysterious side comes to life. While the upper floors remain relatively restrained, this level turns up the volume with darker colors, bold patterns, and unexpected details. A moody wet bar paired with 1960s-inspired wallpaper anchors one side of the space, while the movie lounge is wrapped in dark wallpaper and elaborate wall trim for a more intimate atmosphere. At the rear, a custom built-in conceals a secret door leading to the wine cellar—a playful nod to the home’s intriguing past.

A Layered Approach

The primary bathroom balances clean, contemporary lines with traditional pattern and a rich mix of materials. Sage green tile laid in a classic herringbone pattern brings color and character to the space, while terrazzo floors and a custom light-wood vanity introduce additional layers of texture and warmth. Together, the contrasting finishes create a bathroom that feels fresh and modern while remaining connected to the more traditional character of the home.

Every detail contributes to the story of the home. Custom built-ins, fireplace surrounds, lighting, materials, and color come together to create interiors that feel layered, sophisticated, and connected to the home’s intriguing history
