This Potomac home renovation is one of our favorite projects—a true example of how thoughtful design can transform a space without expanding the footprint. Our challenge was to reimagine the layout of this traditional home to create better flow, openness, and function, all while preserving the original structure.
The existing layout felt compartmentalized and disconnected. Without adding square footage, we reconfigured the floor plan to remove unnecessary partitions and open up the main living spaces. A central focus of the renovation was the kitchen, which we completely redesigned to be open and inviting, now featuring a generous island that serves as the hub of the home.
Between the garage and the kitchen, we carved out a functional transition zone that includes a mudroom, walk-in pantry, and powder room. This strategic reorganization allowed us to free up space for a more open and expansive kitchen layout, enhancing both flow and usability.
On the second floor, we restructured the primary suite to better reflect the clients’ needs. We introduced a new laundry area just outside the bedroom for convenience, and reallocated space from an oversized bathroom to create a more generous walk-in closet. The new ensuite now features a large walk-in shower, double vanity, and toilet—delivering functionality without compromise.
As a Potomac architect focused on livable luxury, our goal was to ensure every inch of this home served a purpose while elevating the overall experience of daily life.
The interior design concept was inspired by our clients’ Croatian heritage. We wanted the interiors to feel personal, yet timeless—evoking a modern European elegance through subtle patterns, rich textures, and warm wood accents. The result is a harmonious blend of contemporary sophistication and cultural storytelling.
Throughout the home, distinctive tile patterns, layered textiles, curated wallpapers, and custom millwork reflect the family's identity while maintaining a refined, versatile aesthetic. As an interior designer, we believe in using design as a narrative tool—and this home tells a deeply personal story. One of the most meaningful details is the powder room vanity, thoughtfully crafted from our client’s grandmother’s vintage sewing machine. By incorporating this cherished heirloom, we were able to weave family history into the design in a way that’s both beautiful and enduring.
