Blending Classic Character with Modern Living
Located in the heart of Dupont Circle, this full-home renovation reimagines a historic residence with a thoughtful balance of preservation and contemporary design. Our studio provided both architecture and interior design services, aiming to modernize the home’s layout while retaining its traditional charm.
Preserving Original Features While Enhancing Flow
Rather than opting for a fully open-concept plan, we respected the home’s original bones—maintaining room divisions and celebrating historic elements like the central staircase and original fireplace mantles. Strategic wall openings on the main floor improve flow and light, particularly around the front living room, which now feels more spacious and connected. The rear of the home was fully transformed to support modern living. A large kitchen with an island anchors the space, flanked by a new dining area and cozy seating zone—perfect for entertaining or family gatherings. A powder room was subtly added near the stair core for convenience.
The second and third floors were reconfigured to include four ensuite bedrooms, a dedicated laundry room, and abundant storage—creating a more functional and luxurious private realm for the homeowners.
The basement was split into two distinct spaces: a front-facing studio ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) ideal for rental income or an au pair, and a rear family room that connects directly to the backyard—perfect for informal gatherings and relaxation.
Interior Design: A Dialogue Between Past and Present
Inside, the design palette bridges eras—using traditional molding and wall trims to evoke the home’s historic character while pairing them with modern textures and clean-lined finishes. The result is a timeless, layered interior that feels both rooted and refreshed.
