Transitional Townhouse Renovation in Chevy Chase DC
This renovation involved a complete reconfiguration of all levels and the addition of a third floor. The main design challenge was to create an open, light-filled interior while maintaining the same program — reimagined in a way that gives the illusion of a larger home.
Storage played a key role in the redesign, from the custom powder room millwork to integrated furniture pieces like a Murphy bed that adds both function and flexibility.
On the first floor, the layout was opened up and extended toward the front, filling in the existing porch to gain additional interior space. The new plan features a generous kitchen at the back with a central island and a custom coffee and bar station. The staircase was pushed back to make room for a compact yet efficient powder room and coat closet at the front entry. Larger front windows and a wide sliding glass door at the rear bring in abundant natural light and establish a stronger indoor-outdoor connection.
The second floor was reconfigured to include a larger bathroom and two spacious bedrooms — one at the front and one at the rear — with the front bedroom opening onto a new balcony over the extended first floor. A dedicated laundry area was introduced on this level, complete with ample storage to maximize functionality.
The new third-floor addition houses a generous primary suite, designed as a private retreat. It includes a rear-facing balcony, a large walk-in closet, and an expansive primary bathroom.
The basement was also fully redesigned to include a large bedroom, full bathroom, second laundry area, kitchenette, and a comfortable family room — ideal for guests or extended family living.
The result is a highly functional and light-filled home, completely reimagined to support modern living while maximizing every inch of space across all four levels.
